Steel vs Plastic

When it comes to backyard sheds and workshops, there are a few common choices that pop up pretty frequently including wooden framed structures, plastic sheds and ones made from prefab steel. There are many advantages that prefab steel has over wood, but what about plastic? Prefab steel is the best choice out of all three for a multitude of reasons and it’s important to figure out exactly what you want out of a steel building so that you can understand why. Here are just a few reasons prefab steel buildings are better than plastic sheds for your backyard.

Durable

Where steel is far and away the clear winner is in terms of durability. Steel is one of the world’s strongest materials, able to last for years while withstanding outdoor elements like extreme weather conditions, pests and even fire. Unfortunately, plastic does not have this same capacity. Plastic sheds tend to be lightweight but with none of the strength benefits of steel; as steel is a material with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Plastic sheds are also not usually built into ground foundation the same way that steel structures are. Because of this, it doesn’t always stand up to different types of weather conditions very well. Prefab steel building are specifically designed for each piece of the structure to fit together perfectly while this isn’t the case with ready-made plastic sheds. There are tons of cracks, crevices and spaces between pieces that pests would be able to slip through and burrow into – which is something you don’t have to worry about with prefab steel buildings. In terms of fire resistance, plastic is a material that will melt when exposed to high amounts of heat. All of these things are why plastic structures will deteriorate at a much faster rate than one made from steel.

Customizable

What separates prefab steel buildings from plastic sheds is also the fact that our prefab buildings are fully customizable and able to fit in with your specific needs, whereas a plastic one won’t be able to be specified to your vision. Plastic sheds are designed to fit a wide range of uses, but ignore that every building owner is different and will all want particular things from their structure. Depending on what you need your structure for, you’ll be able to decide the size and layout that you want to make sure that it’s just what you’re looking for. This is why it’s important to know exactly how you want your building to look and feel, because prefab steel affords you the ability to make that a reality to a certain degree – something you won’t get at all with pre-constructed plastic sheds.

Recyclable

Where steel also wins is the fact that the material is 100% recyclable, which isn’t always the case with plastic. A lot of materials can be recycled but steel is the most reused material on the planet; meaning an older steel building will always be repurposed into some other type of commercial or industrial construction usage. Each and every year, about 80 million tons of steel are recycled and that’s just in North America. It’s a material that is constantly being reinvented and repurposed in ways that save time and money in addition to lessening the negative impact on the environment. With plastic, it’s hard to tell just how much of these structures end up being used again once they’re no longer needed, but it’s definitely not being completely reused the way prefab steel is.
